Claire Grahame, artist and sculptor

A word from Claire.

My journey through art started young, I had a passion for making things either out of clay or fabric. I studied ceramics and dress at A level and then went onto to achieve a BA Hons in Fashion and Textiles. I specialised in men's wear and later worked as a men's wear designer for the high street multiples.

Throughout my life I have worked on developing my artistic skills. Whilst raising a family I continued to broaden my abilities by working freelance in wardrobe for TV and theatre. I picked up new skills in watercolour and painting, and continued with my life drawing. The transfer from 2D to 3D through a return to clay with figurative sculpture was a natural progression. The work that I am producing now comes from a combination of this array of skills. Fashion and costuming / creating clothes / building 'a look' around the body. Now I sculpt the body form as well as dress it.

Sculpture and PaintingWhat I Do

My sculptures are representational of the model in pose and I build up the form with the clay. I do not use any armatures which is why the majority of the pieces are sitting. The sculpture is then hollowed out before firing. Once I have completed sculpting I then work on design, using colour and texture to bring another dimension to the piece.

By casting the fired sculpture this has allowed me to explore different combinations of dressing to create a collection of unique pieces out of one form.

The decoupage technique that I use enables me to form additional detail, changing the character of the pose. I use a variety of papers ... tissue paper ; wrapping paper ; hand made paper ; embellished Japanese paper ; and hand marbled paper. I have collected papers on the basis of what ever interests me and takes my eye, these are then selected from, and come into use at the right moment. Some papers are embroidered and stitched adding another dimension to the work.

As a water colourist I developed a love of working with a limited pallet this is another crucial element of my design choices.
